Online Deaf Awareness Training with Dot Sign Language

Dot’s thought provoking and interactive online Deaf Awareness training sessions are great
fun, providing attendees with the tools to improve interaction with deaf people internally and
externally, breaking down communication barriers.

This session will cover discussions regarding the prevalence of deafness in the U.K, Deaf issues, deaf culture and British Sign Language (BSL). We will provide practical steps to help attendees actively promote engagement with BSL users ensuring accessibility, and our ‘hands on’ session in our virtual breakout rooms provide attendees the opportunity to learn basic fingerspelling and BSL relevant to your organisation.

Dot’s teachers are all Deaf BSL users. They are the best people to teach their language and answer your questions from personal experience. They will teach the session in BSL – so you can immerse yourselves in sign language. We will provide an interpreter to voiceover the session and interpret your questions.

Trainer:

Kathleen Grehan, Director, Dot Sign Language

Kathleen is a Deaf graduate of the social sciences and a qualified teacher of British Sign Language with a particular interest in BSL linguistics. Since starting Dot Sign Language in 2011 she has made it her mission to deliver first class and inspiring lessons in BSL and Deaf Awareness. A priority for her has always been to make the learning process enjoyable, as much a social event as an educational experience. Kathleen also enjoys going out to local schools and youth groups to give them a taste of BSL, Deaf awareness and Deaf culture. She strongly believes that we should try and engage all young children and get them to learn this beautiful, visual language. This way we can reduce that gap between Deaf and hearing people and help eliminate social isolation of Deaf people of all ages.

Apart from her teaching duties, Kathleen plays a full and active role in all aspects of Dot’s business. This includes marketing, future planning, finance, website content and update and basic administration. A relatively recent achievement that has excited her is the challenge of designing her own curriculum and assessments in BSL, to deliver a Stage 1 course to undergraduates and postgraduates at the University of Surrey. This has required her to bring BSL in line, as far as possible, with the eleven spoken languages in the program. BSL has quickly became a firm favourite with the students. Kathleen now delivers three Stage 1 courses each year and this year, for the first time, she was asked to deliver a Stage 2 course.

In her previous career Kathleen has been a Disability/Deaf Campaigner for four organisations: National Union of Students (NUS); RNID, BDA and Disability Rights Commission (DRC) between October 2000 and September 2011. She is committed to equality and empowerment for D/deaf, disabled and all diverse groups within society.
