ASPECTS 6: Effective communication: today and tomorrow [TG1/ASPECTS6_EFFECTIVE_COMMS]

This workshop is part of the cpd25 Aspects programme, aimed at library staff looking to acquire additional skills and knowledge or staff working towards Chartership.

We all test out our communication skills on a daily basis whether working with team members, mangers or anyone using our services. Whatever the situation it is essential to get points of view across confidently and clearly and get the outcomes needed to work effectively.

And never more so in the current climate of video calling.

Instinctively engaging the appropriate language, tone of voice and body language in each of these different settings, especially in difficult situations, can take some practice – particularly when we are limited to a screen. Chairing meetings or simply taking part in a team catch up takes on a different dimension and requires adjustments to the way we use our body language, tone of voice and even the background. For many of us this last year plus has been a whole new world!

At this workshop communications expert Wendy Smith will cover the fundamental skills you need to be able to work professionally with anyone and everyone you come in contact with. Wendy will cover a broad range of techniques that will improve your overall portfolio of interpersonal skills whether face to face or through a screen.

What you will learn about:

  • Chairing a meeting online
  • Body language
  • Voice and making the most of it through different mediums
  • Tonality
  • Pace – how to vary it and why
  • The importance of paraphrasing.
  • How to be assertive without being aggressive.
  • The power of the pause and filtering out the fillers
  • Words and phrases that do and don’t work
