University of Reading Library

September 2007 saw the retirement of Kathy Paterson, longstanding member of staff at the University of Reading Library. Since 1996, she had been manager of the Library’s team which supports the University’s Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. Previously she had been economics liaison librarian, and before that a part of our Circulation Team.

Kathy did much to improve training opportunities for many library staff, both at Reading and beyond. At the University of Reading Library she was key in the instigation and planning of its weekly term-time ‘staff development hour’. Now ten years old, the programme has a wide and expanding coverage, engaging trainers from within and beyond the University. Kathy was also instrumental in the University of Reading Library gaining and renewing Investor in People (IiP) status in 2003 and 2005 respectively. Until recently, Kathy also shared her training skills and experience with the M25 Consortium of Academic Libraries CPD25 group.

From 1 October, Gordon Connell was promoted to Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences Faculty Team Manager, replacing Kathy Paterson. He retains responsibility for the Bulmershe Library [site] as well as taking on the faculty team and staff development roles. His predecessor is a hard act to follow but Gordon is already proving a very worthy successor.
