Equal opportunities and the implications of the new equalities framework was the theme of the of the Consortium’s AGM on Friday 9 June. Catherine Wilson, a partner at the law firm Eversheds, got the audience involved in her presentation on the legal implications of equal opportunities legislation. Following this Erica Halvorsen, Interim Director of the Equalities Challenge Unit, summarised the evolving equalities framework, particularly the new Commission for Equalities and Human rights. She also outlined the services provided by the Equalities Challenge Unit to support the Higher Education sector in promoting equality and diversity. The final presentation was from Carole Campayne, the Equality and Diversity Manager at London South Bank University, who spoke on the proactive equalities agenda her unit was leading in pursuit of London South Bank’s mission of becoming a centre of excellence for diversity and equality. Two of the Consortium’s working groups also gave an update of their activities. Christine Wise, Chair, Disaster Management Group and Head of Special Collections, Senate House Library and Glyn Price, Technical Services Manager at the London School of Economics gave an update on the Disaster Management Group’s activities. John Wolstenholme, Head of Learning Resources at Thames Valley University reported on the London Health Libraries & M25 Consortium Joint working group.
