Four Consortium libraries have been recognised by the Museums Libraries
and Archives Council (MLA) as having collections of outstanding
national and international importance. The MLA announced a list of 38
collections across England in October this year under its Designation
Scheme, designed to raise the profile of libraries and help them
attract visitors and additional funds.
All of the collections within the LSE library and the Wellcome Library
as well as the Beckett Collection at Reading University Library and the
Mass Observation Archive at Sussex University were amongst the thirty
eight collections recognised under the scheme.
Launched in 1997, the scheme was initially used to recognise Museum
collections that were a significant part of England's cultural
heritage. The Designation Scheme was extended to libraries and archives
for the first time in 2005 and the MLA is setting up a rolling
programme to accommodate further applications. Mark Wood, the MLA
Chairman welcomed the list describing the 38 collections awarded
designation status as 'among those in England that stand out from the
crowd and it's extremely satisfying to be able to raise their profile
through the Designation Scheme. |
