Minutes of the meeting held 6 December 2005These were accepted as a true record. 3. Matters arisingThe following matters arising were noted: Under item 3, MD would circulate a copy of the draft Public Library Strategy to Working Group members for their comments and would raise this issue at the next M25 Steering Group meeting. ACTION MD Under item 3, MD reported that she had invited Graham Fisher, Chief Executive, ALM London, to speak to the Working Group at its next meeting regarding the MLA Strategic Framework. Under item 3, FOB reported that she had circulated the Manifesto for London Libraries 2012 to Working Group members. Under item 3, MD reported that she had arranged for copies of the new M25 Consortium flyer to be circulated to Working Group members and to organisations such as ALCL. Under item 5, MD reported that the COOLPerStor report had been received by the M25 Steering Group at its last meeting. [Secretary’s note: this is available from the M25 website ] 4. Presentation: Dr Michael Reynier, London HigherMD welcomed Dr Michael Reynier, Deputy Director, London Higher, to the meeting. MR briefed Working Group members on two key London Higher initiatives where the M25 Consortium could make particular contributions. These were collaborating on the development of a fact-sheet on academic libraries in London; and contributions to the Research Excellence Project. Fact-sheet on academic libraries in LondonMR circulated recent examples of statistical fact-sheets on international students in London and on higher education staff in London. Following the production of the new M25 Consortium flyer, it was agreed that the M25 Consortium was well-placed to work with London Higher to produce an up-to-date fact-sheet on academic libraries in London. MD would brief the M25 Steering Group and Advocacy Working Group about this initiative and MD and CW would meet to scope out initial content in order to take this project forward. ACTION MD and CW Research Excellence ProjectMR circulated a document outlining the potential themes for the Research Excellence Project which would be completed during 2006. In discussion, Working Group members made initial suggestions regarding content for the various headings in the document, concentrating especially on aspects of Infrastructure. It was agreed that the M25 Consortium’s contribution could best be taken forward by a short-term consultancy. MD would bring this to the attention of the M25 Steering Group and following commitment of funds scoping work would commence as soon as possible. ACTION MD MR also drew attention to the forthcoming report on healthcare, which would be published in May 2006. He was seeking case study exemplars to include with the final report, to illustrate healthcare education in London. MD asked Working Group members to contact her not later than mid-March 2006 with suggestions for onward transmission to London Higher. ACTION ALL MD thanked MR for his presentation. 5. Action Plan – reports from Working Group membersALCLAS continued to liaise with ALCL regarding key strategic issues. ALM LondonMD reported that she and Robert Hall, Chair of the M25 Consortium, had recently met with Graham Fisher, Chief Executive of ALM London, to discuss topics of mutual interest, in particular the MLA Review and the new Strategic Framework. The British LibraryMD reported that she was liaising with SG regarding the event at the British Library in Spring 2006 for M25 Consortium members. ACTION MD and SG Committee of Departmental LibrariansMD would refer the Committee’s enquiry regarding subject indexing in electronic library catalogues to John Gilby, M25 Systems Team. ACTION MD HE / FE liaisonFOB reported on the second joint HE/FE seminar, “London Knowledge City”, which had taken place on 24 January 2006 at the British Library Conference Centre. This had been well-received, and plans were being discussed for a further seminar in approximately six months time. The key issue which had arisen in the course of the seminar was information literacy. LLDAFOB reported on current LLDA initiatives. These included:
She reported on two recent meetings: with John Dolan, Head of Library Policy at the MLA on the MLA Strategic Framework; and with the Open University in London on learning through public libraries. Finally, FOB reported that the LLDA constitution was expected shortly to change. London HigherKey matters of mutual interest were discussed under item 4 above. London Olympics 2012MD reported that ALM London would be organising focus groups so that representatives from the library domain could discuss and formulate contributions to the cultural programmes and that further information would be available shortly. Regional library consortiaAE continued to advise Working Group members of new initiatives. Research Information NetworkBM would circulate a recent report on the Research Information Network to Working Group members. ACTION BM 6. Any other businessMD thanked BM for making a presentation on the Working Group’s activities to the M25 Consortium meeting on 27 January 2006. BM reported that four new members had been received into membership at that meeting:
PD formally announced her resignation from the Working Group. MD thanked her on behalf of Working Group members for her contributions and wished her well. Taking up PD’s suggestion, she would invite Dilys Hall to attend the next Working Group meeting. ACTION MD 7.
