Minutes of the Meeting held at Senate House Library, University of London

Present:  Tim Cullen, Bill Downey, Dilys Hall, Ann Murphy(Chair), Ann Sainsbury,
                 Christine Wise (Secretary)

By invitation: Dr Joanna Newman, Head of Strategic Partnerships, Higher Education, The British Library

1. Welcome and introductions

AM welcomed colleagues to the meeting, her first as Chair of the Working Group.

2. Presentation by Dr Joanna Newman

Head of Strategic Partnerships, Higher Education, The British Library

Dr Newman introduced the work of the Higher Education Department at the British Library, initially led by Jan Wilkinson, now by Ian Snowley.  The department’s remit was to provide a focal point for engagement with Vice-Chancellors, Directors of Library Services and senior higher education administrators, the research community, the publishing sector, research information networks, funding bodies and research councils.  The remit was very much outward-facing and including scoping issues in the research world, partnerships and lobbying.

Amongst issues of current key concern for the British Library Dr Newman highlighted the following of interest to the higher education community:

• The British Library’s strategy to develop an integrated digital platform; examples included an innovative relationship with JISC to develop an archive of digital sound recordings; digitisation of 19th century newspapers; potential extension of access to the digital copies of the 17th and 18th century newspapers in the Burney Collection.

• National Postgraduate Training Days, initially in the arts, humanities and social sciences, for research postgraduates; these were extremely popular.  A session on entrepreneurship was being planned for 2009.

• Following the publication of the Google Generation Report the British Library was now following this up with longitudinal research to examine users’ study trends and behaviour over three years in order to inform future planning.

• The British Library is currently developing plans for Project Gateway, a digital research centre to be located to the rear of the Library building, in conjunction with other partners.  To be completed by 2014, the space will enable users to link to or browse digital content; there will be no physical collections.  Sub-projects will include an examination of digital literacy in sixth form and FE Colleges

• Phase 2 of the UK Research Reserve is now underway, with Imperial College as the lead partner (http://www.bl.uk/news/2008/pressrelease20080717a.html).

In discussion, Working Group members noted that M25 Consortium members could assist in promotion of the National Postgraduate Training Days and in composition of focus groups; that liaison with CPD25 could enable opportunities such as staff secondments and shadowing to be developed, and also participation in the 21st Century Curation Programme at the British Library.

AM thanked Dr Newman for her presentation.
